Hôm thứ tư vừa qua Apple đã cho ra mắt phiên bản 5.0.1 của trình duyệt Safari cho máy Mac và PC. Phiên bản mới này cho phép người dùng được phép cài đặt thêm add-on của hãng thứ 3 vào trình duyệt ví dụ như widget thông báo có email mới, hay thông báo khi có tin tức mới.Người dùng Safari từ nay cũng có thể dễ dàng bổ sung các tính năng cho trình duyệt thông qua Safari Extensions Gallery tại địa chỉ extensions.apple.com hoặc từ các trang web khác.
Tăng cường bảo mật
Apple thông báo rằng phần mở rộng của các hãng thứ ba đều được bảo vệ bởi chữ kí số của hãng nhằm chống lại các hành động giả mạo, đồng thởi để đảm bảo rằng những cập nhật được cung cấp cũng xuất phát từ chính những nhà phát triển thành phần mở rộng đó. Tuy nhiên hãng không cho biết quy trình thực hiện có giống với quy trình kiểm duyệt ứng cho iPhone hay không.Apple cũng tỏ ra rất cẩn thận khi chỉ ra rằng tất cả phần mở rộng đều chỉ chạy trên sandbox. Điều này có nghĩa các ứng dụng của hãng thứ 3 không có quyền can thiệp trực tiếp vào hệ thống. Các phần mở rộng của Safari cũng không giao tiếp trực tiếp với các trang web, trừ những trang web được chỉ định bởi những người phát triển phần mở rộng đó.
Phần mở rộng (extension)
Việc cài đặt và sử dụng phần mở rộng trong Safari được thực hiện khá đơn giản. Từ menu chỉ cần chọn Safari Extensions Gallery, người dùng sẽ được đưa tới trang extensions.apple.com. Tại đây Apple cung cấp hơn 100 phần mở rộng được chia thành 16 nhóm khác nhau, như: mạng xã hội, công cụ tìm kiếm, mua sắm, công cụ RSS... Apple cũng có một số gợi ý về những phần mở rộng hữu ích như MLB Toolbar (cung cấp kết quả các giải đấu theo thời gian thực) hay Bing Hightlights (tìm kiếm trong Bing bằng cách bôi đen từ khóa trong bất kì trang web nào).Để cài đặt phần mở rộng người dùng chỉ cần lựa chọn và nhấn vào Install Now, mọi việc còn lại là của Safari. Để tắt và thay đổi các lựa chọn của phần mở rộng, người dùng có thể vào Safari ->Preferences ->Extensions.
Phiên bản Safari 5.0.1 hiện đã có cho Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 và Mac.
